Marco Island is a city in Collier County, Florida, United States, located on an island by the same name in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Southwest Florida. It is a principal city of the Naples–Marco Island Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 16,413 at the 2010 census.

Originally named San Marco Island by Spanish explorers, Marco Island is the largest barrier island within Southwest Florida's Ten Thousand Islands area extending southerly to Cape Sable. Like the City of Naples to the north, Marco Island enjoys a tropical climate, specifically a tropical wet and dry or savanna type (Aw under the Köppen system). It is known for distinct wet and dry seasons, with most of the rainfall falling between the months of June and October.

Marco Island is located 16 miles South of Naples, Florida on the largest of the Florida Everglades 10,000 islands. Spectacular sunsets, sun-splashed beaches and a tropical island ambiance.

Along the edge of the clear green Gulf of Mexico waters. Marco Island is covered in famous Florida foliage, such as coconut and banyan, bougainvillea and jasmine.

The island is six miles long and four miles wide. Connected to the mainland by two bridges.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 17.1 square miles (44 km2). 10.6 square miles (27 km2) of it is land and 6.5 square miles (17 km2) of it (38.13%) is water.

Located on Hernando Drive on Marco Island, Tigertail beach offers thirty-one acres of everything from natural resources to beachside amenities, making your visit a rewarding one. With Marco Island condominiums standing tall in the distance, Tigertail's dunes and green-and-white striped cabanas suggest the picturesque calm many seek in a day at Marco Island Beaches. A short distance across the tidal lagoon, what only ten years ago was Tigertail’s sandbar is now Sand Dollar Island, a barrier island in the making. Changes in the formation of the island are noticeable on a yearly basis and it development is a welcome occurrence for the many shorebirds that now use it as a nesting site. This is a terrific spot for Florida Birding, and one of the favorite Beaches in Marco Island Florida.

Residents Beach:


Residents Beach is a members-only beach located on Collier Boulevard at the intersection of San Marco Road. The beach is very wide, white and soft, providing plenty of sunbather space. The Sessions Pavilion contains brand-new restroom facilities as well as a large deck for dining, partly shaded. A shell kiosk, at the end of the boardwalk to the beach, educates beachgoers on the types of shells found here and what they look like. The Snack Shack at the pavilion serves breakfast and lunch. The beach closes at sunset.

South Marco Beach Access is a 70-parking space lot with rest room access.

The parking lot is located on Swallow Avenue and is a short walk across South Collier Boulevard to a one-acre beach access. The walk is lined with sabal palm and is surrounded by plush hotels on Marco Island. Discover this get away!

The Mackle Park community center is a great place to hang out. There are covered basketball courts, shuffleboard and bocce ball, an indoor game room with ping pong and an X-box, and the Kid's Cove playground and spray park. You can also find a 10-acre lake surrounded by a walking trail and Canine Cove. The offices for City of Marco Island Parks and Recreation are located here. Both the spray park and Canine Cove dog park are open from 8 a.m. to dusk.

The facilities include; a pro shop, four tennis courts with lighting, two clay courts, and two indoor courts for racquetball/handball. Round-robin and league tournaments are held here throughout the year. Strap on your sweatband and try to keep those McEnroe-type tantrums down to a minimum, this is a family place and after all, it's only a game.

Spike Jonze's Adaptation, the film version of The Orchid Thief, by Susan Arlean, travels into the South Florida swampland of the Fakahatchee strand in search of the rare flowers. Forty-four native orchid species as wells as a wide array of other amazing plantlife can be seen year round in the Fakahatchee Strand. The twenty mile stretch of swampland contains the largest grove of native royal palms in the state and different sites for every season. Open daily from 8 a.m.
